They are Malatesta, soldiers under the orders of Pandolfo III Malatesta. They deal with re-enactment, dissemination and experimental archeology, without forgetting the main rule: have fun and entertain! The objective of the armed sector is to involve the public that militates around an encampment or attends the shows, making them passionate about the Middle Ages and the life of an arms company. Born more than 30 years ago, this sector has laid the foundations for the historical group, making it always distinguished by the setting up of a medieval menagerie, in which the typical day of a soldier is recalled, with training, patrols and cooking . Inside the camp you can find an exhibition of weapons and armor, the corner of the cerusic, that of the gunsmith. Meetings are organized in which the armed men themselves explain how weapons and armor were built and the reasons why each piece was the best result of the technique of the time. A fence is also set up inside the camp, where fencing lessons are given to children, teenagers and adults. In addition, anyone who wants to try their hand, has the experience of fighting knights. They are part of the artistic and popular repertoire: fights between two or more sodales, street skirmishes, duels, itinerant fights and fighting in ranks, armed with pikes.
One of the founding pillars of the Fanese Group, the Court of Pandolfo III Malatesta and his courtiers, represent the noble slice of the Historical Group. The historical refinement of their clothes allows the helper to wear Damask and velvet clothes, embellished with Pearls and trimmings that make the sector one of the most showy and sumptuous. Parallel to the clothing, a careful research of the hairstyles and attitudes of the gentlemen and ladies, allow the Court of Pandolfo a re-enactment as likely as possible to the reality of the time. Not only beauty and flashiness, because in addition to accompanying the procession in the parades of the historic alleys, always strictly escorted by armed guards, this sector recalls the typical dances of the time, bringing back what were the court dances and music, in the squares all over Italy nowadays.
Fire and flames
From the beginning of the historical group, the Pandolfaccia fire-breathing men lit their torches in the streets and squares of the cities. One of the most ancient and suggestive artistic attractions for the spectator, which leave him speechless with every flash of fire. Since 2012 the group has expanded with the formation of the Dancing Flames, a group of dancers who, based on rhythmic music and with the aid of fire tools, create a real alchemy of genres between fusion, belly dance and ATS. The combination of the two realities leads to the creation of suggestive and engaging shows for the spectator, which led the subgroup to the creation of real artistic narratives such as “Hecate”, “The dream of the alchemist” and “In the night of Valpurga”.
A parade cannot be defined as such if there is no sound of drums at the opening to dictate its pace. This is how the group of musicians of the Pandofaccia, mainly dedicates themselves to the performances with drum and chiarine (medieval trumpets without keys) of the typical melodies of the time. The staff is made up of clarets, imperial drums and maple wood snares and cordura tie rods, all handmade by the masters themselves, according to ancient tradition. The musicians not only offer a suggestive accompaniment during the square shows, but they also perform independently with original musical performances, enhanced by the use of specially created movements and choreography.
The flagweavers of Pandolfaccia, born in 2004 within the already existing historical group, the standard bearers aged between 6 and 35 years, propose their choreography on the rhythm of the drums, between a fire and a duel. The malleability of this group allows to modulate the duration and type of show according to every need. In fact, the standard bearers of the Pandolfaccia are able to accompany the parade in the city streets with simple launches, or perform in the squares shows of rare beauty, and originality, fascinating and stupendous the audience. In 2011 they reached the turning point by staging their first theatrical flag show, named “Regina rosae”, followed by the last “Orpheus and Eurydice”. Since 2015 they have been part of the Italian Flagwaving League, an important national reality that allows standard bearers to be able to deal with other groups from all over Italy. Over the years, Pandolfaccia has reported some important results in the Traditional Flag Parade organized by the L.I.S., which also gave the possibility of being able to train its teachers making them achieve the title of Flag Masters.
The artistic flair of the members of the Historical Group is released in this type of show. The narrative representation of a story, told by means of a flag, through body language, alternating theatrical stages and dances, all in a frame of music and colors, transports the viewer to another dimension. The most recent project is Orpheus and Eurydice: “The representation of one of the most famous stories of Greek mythology, The love of Orpheus and Eurydice, in a timeless setting tells of the love between a young musician and his beautiful water lily, but where there is love, there is also envy …. and so that this love is transformed into a heroic undertaking in the flames of the underworld, against everyone and everything … .. ” The flag wavers represent in an allegorical key the emotions and sensations of the highlights of the story, surrounded by narrative interventions and music of great impact. The artistic scenography, the countless games of colored lights, are the background to one of the most suggestive and engaging shows that a spectator can attend. The show, lasting about 40 minutes, can be adapted to various types of squares and audiences. The complexity and the meticulous care that this type of execution requires, make these shows performed by an exclusive elite of groups in Italy.
